Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Above the Rim Club?

Above the Rim Club is Penn Basketball's hospitality opportunity for donors who make leadership gifts to Basketball ($2,500+ or $1,250+ for former Penn Basketball players and managers). ATR is comprised of former student-athletes, alumni, current and former parents, and fans of Penn basketball.

Any donor whose total giving to Basketball equals or surpasses $2,500 (or $1,250 for former Penn Basketball players and managers) in a given fiscal year is eligible for entry into ATR hospitality. ATR hospitality is typically offered one hour prior to tipoff of home men’s basketball and select women’s basketball through halftime and includes food and beverages. Those who are donors at $2,500+ of the Basketball Varsity Fund, supporting the daily experiences of Penn Basketball student-athletes, also qualify for the University’s Benjamin Franklin Society (BFS).

Above the Rim Club donors are also at the top of Penn Athletics six-tiered priority ticketing system for Penn Basketball games, as seen below:

1.            Above the Rim Club member

2.            R. Tait McKenzie Society member ($2,500+ donors to Penn Athletics)

3.            Non-Above the Rim Club donor to Basketball

4.            Non-R. Tait McKenzie Society donor to Athletics

5.            Penn Basketball season ticket holder

6.            Penn Alumni

  1. How is my ATR membership for FY2021 impacted with no 2020-21 winter sport competition?

While there will be no home men’s or women’s basketball games this winter, please know that we will show our appreciation for your support by inviting you to join us in the ATR hospitality room throughout the FY2022 home men’s basketball schedule and select women’s basketball games at no charge.

  1. With no competition in the winter semester, is my FY2020 gift able to be refunded?

No, your gift is not able to be refunded, all gifts to Penn Basketball are philanthropically driven and tax-deductible. Our ATR Club stewardship opportunities, including the hospitality room at home men’s basketball and select women’s basketball games, are a thank you provided to our most generous donors for their support in the previous fiscal year. What you are supporting has not changed: you are providing much needed financial resources to help run our programs and the immediate reward is impacting the current and future experiences of Penn student-athletes. Our goal will to be provide as much value as possible to our generous ATR donors within the constraints we will be working under, including continued virtual events with coaches and decorated alumni.

  1. How does my support impact Penn Basketball, and why should I still support Penn Basketball in fiscal year 2021 (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021)?

The Penn Basketball Varsity Fund is essential to the current and long-term success of Penn’s 40+ student-athletes and managers that make up Penn Basketball. Gifts go directly to offset costs associated with academic services, mentoring and leadership programs, sports performance as well as sport specific operational costs, such as recruiting and equipment. The financial contributions of Penn Basketball supporters advance the mission of Penn Basketball and provide a foundation for our student-athletes during their time at Penn and well into the future.

The University appropriates roughly 40% of the entire athletics budget creating an overwhelming need for philanthropy to help close this financial gap. While expenses within Penn Basketball will most likely decrease during the 2020-21 winter season, there are fixed costs associated with running a high-functioning basketball program. These costs are significant and with typical revenue streams such as ticket sales, sponsorship sales and media dollars expected to decrease dramatically, we will need our Penn Basketball supporters more than ever.

  1. What are the other opportunities associated with my $2,500+ gift from fiscal year 2020?

With gifts totaling $2,500+ to one or more Penn Athletics varsity annual funds in fiscal year 2020, you are provided membership in the Benjamin Franklin Society, the University’s annual leadership giving society, for FY2021. Click here to learn more.

In addition, we will be working to continue to provide more virtual programming exclusive to ATR members in the winter and spring of FY2021, building off of our coach X&O chalk talk sessions and Quakers in the NBA panel.

  1. Will I be considered a donor to Penn Basketball in FY2021 if I do not renew my support?

No, you will not be considered a donor to Penn Basketball in FY2021 unless you make a gift to Penn Basketball between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. You will not be included on the Penn Basketball honor roll and will no longer be considered a consecutive year donor if you choose not to support Penn Basketball during the 2021 fiscal year.
