Penn Quakers recognize Athletics supporters in first-ever multi-sport Penn Athletics Thank-a-Thon
PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday, October 18, 2018 Penn student-athletes took time out of their busy class and practice schedules to say “thank you” to Penn Athletics supporters.
The first-ever multi-sport Penn Athletics Thank-a-Thon held by the Penn Champions Club drew over 200 student-athletes from 12 teams to Weightman Gym, where they were hard at work writing personal thank you cards that will be mailed to athletics donors (Penn Champions Club members) to their respective programs during the last fiscal year (July 1, 2017- June 30, 2018) and to date this 2019 fiscal year. In all, Penn student-athletes hand-wrote nearly 1,500 notes personally thanking donors for their support.
A thank you banner was displayed for all student-athletes to sign as another way to show their gratitude to the Penn Athletics alumni, family, and friends whose gifts to their varsity annual fund programs provide for operational expenses, including equipment, uniforms, travel, and recruiting costs, as well as strength and conditioning and student services. Annual donations fund approximately 20% of the Penn Athletics operational budget, which is the single largest external revenue source.
“Every resource that is funded from your donations – everything from our gear to travel opportunities to athletic training – helps us have an incredible experience at Penn as student-athletes,” said Sara Ketring, a member of the Softball team and one of the participants in the fall thank-a-thon, explaining why she was thankful to the softball community for their support.
“Your generosity allows our student-athletes to thrive during their four years on campus, and provides them with a foundation to be successful in their careers beyond,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. M. Grace Calhoun.
The Penn Champions Club plans to organize two more multi-sport Penn Athletics Thank-a-Thons throughout the remainder of the 2019 fiscal year, one in each season, giving every varsity team a chance to participate in a thank-a-thon this year, with the goal of having a thank-you-note from a student-athlete sent to every Penn Athletics donor to a varsity team.
